Press Release

Igor and Natasha Tsukanov have acquired a picture by one of Russia’s leading artists, Dmitry Plavinsky, as a gift to the Tretyakov Gallery.

“Cartography of Terror,” a large-scale, four-meter composition, belongs to a series of works with which the artist has been occupied in the United States since the beginning of the 1990s.

According to Dmitry Plavinsky, “the work is connected not only with the image of a fish, which is present throughout my artistic creations, as well as with the image of a tortoise, but also with the terrible tragedy that took place in New York on September 11, 2001. A certain irony is to be found in the picture, for example, in its sub-title, ‘An Unspecified Imaginary Plan by a Network of Terrorist Organizations Suspected of Preparing Criminal Activities Directed toward the Destruction of Manhattan.’”

“Igor and Natasha Tsukanov have been friends of the Tretyakov Gallery for more than 15 years,” said Irina Lebedeva, the Gallery’s General Director. “Thanks to their support during that time, the Gallery’s collection of 20th and 21st-century art has been enriched with works by a number of well-known Russian artists. Their acquisition of Dmitry Plavinsky’s “Cartography of Terror” is a continuation of that support and represents a valuable addition to the artist’s three early works that are already in our collection.”
