Among the most recent acquisitions was Igor Makarevich’s conceptual piece “Sothebys” (1988), created soon after the famed Sotheby’s auction in Moscow in the same year. The name of the “Sothebys” auction house in Russian orthography on a slab, reminiscent of the cover of a coffin, symbolized, in the artist’s concept, “the burial of pure art” in the Soviet underground alongside the emergence of the art-market, which appeared after the commercial success of the Sotheby’s auction in Moscow.
